How to use the site
This page describes the Business & Human Rights website, and how to find your way around it. The site uses the latest technology to help all users find information quickly and easily. There is a separate page describing accessibility features.
What does this website cover?
This resource centre and online library covers over 4500 companies, over 160 countries, over 150 issues. It catalogues thousands of links to a wide range of materials published by companies, NGOs, governments, intergovernmental organisations, journalists, academics, etc. It includes reports of corporate misconduct, as well as positive examples of "good practice" by companies.
The library is multilingual, containing items in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and German. We plan to expand the non-English content.
How is the website structured?
Library
The core of the website is the Library, where you can find descriptions of thousands of resources organised by subject.
The library is divided into 11 categories:
The categories are arranged in a tree-like structure. Each category may contain several subcategories, and each subcategory may contain further subcategories.
Links may appear in more than one category. For example, an article about child labour in India will appear in two sections: "India" in the Regions/Countries section and "Child labour" in the Issues section.
Links appear with a red or green dot before them to indicate whether the link is good or broken. We endeavour to fix broken links. In any event, we do not remove items with broken links because they continue to provide useful information (including a brief abstract) that could enable you to track down the item elsewhere.
Other parts of the site
In addition to navigating the library, you can use other tools for finding what you want.
There is a simple text search at the top left of the page, and two special search forms, Advanced search and Cross-category search.
Latest items lists all materials added to the Resource Centre today. The daily News highlights are listed on the home page and in the News section.
The Sitemap lists all sections of the site.
A collection of materials useful for people who are new to the subject of business and human rights is maintained in the Gettihttp://www.business-humanrights.org/Categories/Gettingstarted ng started section.
How do I find what I want on the website?
Navigation
You can navigate the site by selecting one of the categories in the Library section. These categories appear on every page in the Search box at the top left, wherever you are in the website. Once you have selected a category, a list of subcategories will appear on the page. Select a subcategory, and continue drilling down through the categories until you reach a topic containing links.
The site displays for each item the title (in the form of a hyperlink), author, date and a brief abstract. If you select the link title, you will be taken to the original article. To view related subjects, follow the "Related topics" link under each item.
Search
At the top left of the page there is a search box. Type in the word or phrase you wish to search for. The results will include every occurrence found in the site ordered by relevance. If any topics or categories from the library match your search, they will be displayed first. For example, if you search for "child labour" you will find numerous results, and at the top will be the child labour section.
Cross Category search
You can search across categories in the Cross-category search by ticking different subjects. To expand and collapse the list, click on the add and minus signs on the left.
This feature narrows the search results. If you select "India", "Carpet & rug" and "Child labour", you will receive only those items that cover all 3 subjects, ie. only those items covering the use of child labour in the Indian carpet/rug industry.
Accessibility features
The information on our website should be easy to access by all users. There are a number of features described in the Accessibility section which will make the site easier to use.
