les Mapuches du Chili sont aujourd’hui chassés de leurs terres par les multinationales, avec l’appui du gouvernement Bachelet. De nombreuses ONG et Berne ont pris position contre ces violences. Victor Ancalaf, dirigeant Mapuche, ex-prisonnier politique, était cette semaine à Genève. Interview...Pour réprimer les velléités territoriales de la minorité mapuche (10% de la population du pays), le gouvernement chilien a ressuscité une loi antiterroriste promulguée sous Pinochet. Spoliés de leurs terres par les multinationales, sans recours juridique ni politique, les Mapuches font du corps à corps pour résister aux expropriations. Ils s’exposent ainsi à de brutales interventions policières et aux arrestations arbitraires. Ces abus ont été dénoncés par l’ONU et de nombreuses ONG...nos territoires ont été envahis par des multinationales forestières, des centrales hydrauliques, des industries de pêche...

China said...that it had broken up a child labor ring...Authorities in southern China’s Guangdong Province...said they had made several arrests and had already “rescued” more than 100 children from factories in the city of Dongguan, one of the country’s largest manufacturing centers for electronics and consumer goods sold around the world...The children, mostly between the ages of 13 and 15, were often tricked or kidnapped by employment agencies in an impoverished part of western Sichuan Province called Liangshan and then sent to factory towns in Guangdong, where they were sometimes forced to work 300 hours a month...The abuses may also reflect the combined pressures of worker shortages, high inflation and a rising currency that have reduced profit margins of some Chinese factories and forced them to scramble for an edge — even an illegal one — to stay competitive. La ONG Intermon Oxfam denunció en la junta de accionistas de Repsol YPF el "maltrato" por parte de la petrolera a los pueblos indígenas y pidió a la compañía que respete a estos grupos, a lo que el presidente de la multinacional, Antonio Brufau, respondió diciendo que en la actualidad la empresa trabaja en la elaboración de un decálogo de actuación que garantice el respeto a estas comunidades. La ONG logró hacerse oír en la junta gracias a la firma de propietarios de 82.000 acciones...Según Intermón, Repsol no respeta los derechos de la Declaración de Naciones Unidas...[se refiere también a Boston Common Assets Managemment]

Telefónica anunció hoy la donación de un fondo por valor de 10 millones de yuanes --cerca de un millón de euros-- para atender a los damnificados por el seísmo de 7,8 grados en la escala Richter que sacudió el lunes la provincia china de Sichuán…La donación se canalizará a través de las agencias oficiales designadas por el Gobierno chino aunque las ayudas se orientarán principalmente a los niños afectados por el seísmo, informa Telefónica en un comunicado.

Like many of your readers, I am watching the humanitarian crisis unfold in Burma with utter dismay...[T]he role responsible businesses can play should not be overlooked. While I understand the arguments behind calls for companies to boycott the country...responsible businesses can play a positive role in ameliorating the humanitarian impact of disasters of this nature...Let us think twice before pulling business out of despotic countries...If more responsible businesses were in Burma today, the efforts of companies such as Total...would not be a drop in the ocean.

After making heaps of money in China's vast market, heartless foreign corporations have failed to pay a cent towards earthquake relief -- or so claimed text messages buzzing between Chinese mobile phones on Tuesday. The only snag is that every company named in the texts, from McDonald's to Louis Vuitton, has contributed cash, food or rescue equipment, according to the American Chamber of Commerce in China and the firms themselves...Vanke, China's biggest listed developer, became the top target for bloggers, who accused it of forcing employees to limit disaster relief donations to just 10 yuan ($1.44). Press reports subsequently carried forceful denials from Vanke, but bloggers were not deterred from attacking Wang Shi, the company's chairman...Blogs are notorious for eliciting extreme views. The body of opinion in Chinese stores appeared far more moderate. Carrefour, for one, was crowded with shoppers, many pleased that the supermarket giant had donated more than 3 million yuan to disaster relief.
